Betty Solway Smith (1919-2011)
This past winter the Ardens, lost one of their own, Betty Solway Smith. An enthusiastic actress performing in local theater productions for over 50 years, Betty was an influential mainstay in the theatrical community. As a member of the Players Gild and one of the founding members of the Shakespeare Gild, Betty transformed the stage season after season with her inspiring performances.
Highly involved in the community, Betty founded and ran the Young Actors Shakespeare Workshop in 1998 to teach the children of the Ardens the importance of theater, Shakespeare, and “to the show [the children] the power of self-confidence.” The Young Actors Shakespeare Workshop still runs every summer.
She was also an avid collector of works by local Arden artisans. Featured below are some of the pieces recently received from her family. Included are pieces from Miriam Hetzel and Ruth Schaack.
Betty was loved and admired by all those who knew her, and it is sad to see such a cornerstone of the Shakespeare Gild and the Arden community gone. She will be missed.
If you would like to see the ceramics by Miriam Hetzel and Ruth Schaack make sure to stop by the Arden Craft Shop Museum.
